How does Acupuncture relieve pain?
Acupuncture may relieve (both sensory and affective) inflammatory pain. This occurs through activation of a variety of bioactive chemicals through peripheral, spinal, and supraspinal mechanisms. Zhang et al 2014 – Mechanisms of acupuncture in persistent pain

Therapies Used
Acupuncture Needling
Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body. It is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The needles are manipulated manually or the needle may be further stimulated by electrical stimulation (electroacupuncture). Dry needling is another name for what we would refer to as Myofascial Acupuncture, Tendinomuscular Acupuncture and/or Sports Acupuncture.
Initial Treatment $95 / Followup $85
Moxibustion (Moxa)
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy which consists of burning dried mugwort on particular points on the body.
Moxibustion is used to stimulate circulation.
Heat Therapy
Heat therapy is known to enhance circulation, making it beneficial for a wide variety of issues. Combining acupuncture with a heat lamp is a method used to improve blood flow in the targeted areas which may increase the effectiveness of traditional acupuncture. The heat lamp utilised in our practice is an electromagnetic lamp heated with infrared light designed to improve microcirculation. It serves as a clinical alternative to moxibustion and is commonly referred to as an acupuncture heat lamp due to its frequent use during acupuncture treatments. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the heat is believed to boost the patient’s energy and alleviate symptoms of coldness and stagnation that may be causing discomfort.

Glass Suction Cupping with Fire
Through suction, the skin is drawn into the cup by creating a vacuum in the cup placed on the skin over the targeted area. The vacuum is created by the heating and subsequent cooling of the air in the cup. The cup is usually left in place for somewhere between five and fifteen minutes. It is believed by some to help with pain, deep scar tissues in the muscles and connective tissue, muscle knots, and swelling; however, the efficacy of this is unproven.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese Herbal Medicine will include a case history and diagnosis of symptoms. This is followed by the prescription of a herbal formula (herbs) as part of treatment for specific conditions. [Click here for more information about Chinese Herbal Medicine and Chinese Herbs]
Chinese Herbal Initial Consultation $95 (45 minutes)

Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Acupuncture is virtually painless.
Our practitioners use a gentle insertion technique where the needles can hardly be felt during insertion.
Let’s also put the size of the needles used in an Acupuncture treatment into perspective. You could fit approximately 8 Acupuncture Needles inside a typical Doctor’s Medical syringe. Acupuncture needles are rounded towards the tip where as a medical syringe is sharp.
At KC Health Clinic we use ultra fine Japanese needles which are even smaller than traditional Chinese Acupuncture needles.
